Which IPTV Player Will Run on the Television You Bought in Europe

There is no single best IPTV player, because the choice is made for you before you start by two things: the operating system inside your television or streaming device, and the country your app store account belongs to. A Sony set in Madrid, a Hisense in Warsaw, a Samsung in Glasgow and a Philips in Eindhoven can each offer a different list of apps, even when they sit side by side in a shop. So this guide starts with your screen, and only then gets to the players.

First, find out what your television runs

Most televisions sold in Europe over the past several years use one of a handful of systems. The easiest way to check is to open the settings menu and look for “About” or “System information”, or to search for your model number online.

Brands move between systems and use different ones for different ranges, so treat this as a starting point and confirm for your own model. A useful rule: if your TV runs Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV, you have the widest choice of players. If it runs anything else, check the store before assuming, and remember that a streaming stick plugged into the HDMI port gets around almost any limitation for a modest outlay.

Why the app store in Portugal may not match the store in Poland

App stores on televisions are regional. The apps available depend on the country selected when the TV or account was set up, and developers choose where to publish. Stores also remove and reinstate apps from time to time. This means that an app recommended in a forum, or even in our own guides, might not appear on your screen.

A few practical consequences:

• Search by the exact app name and check the developer name matches before installing. Look-alike apps with similar names and icons exist.
• Do not change your TV’s region just to find an app. It can affect other apps, broadcast settings and firmware updates.
• Avoid installing player files from unknown websites. If an app is not in your store and you have a Google TV or Fire TV device, download it only from the developer’s own official source.
• If nothing suitable is available, a streaming stick is usually the cleaner solution.

How you log in shapes the shortlist

An IPTV subscription can be entered into a player in three different ways, and not every player accepts all of them. Euroskara provides the first two by default and portal access for MAG and Formuler boxes.

Players, platform by platform

Google TV and Android TV: Sony, TCL, Philips and streaming boxes

This is the best-supplied platform for IPTV. It covers many televisions and devices such as the Google TV Streamer and Nvidia Shield.

TiViMate is the player most enthusiasts end up with. Its guide is laid out like a traditional broadcast grid, it handles very large channel lists smoothly, and it supports catch-up, recording and automatic frame-rate switching. The free version is usable for live channels; several of the more advanced features, catch-up and recording among them, need a paid Premium upgrade. It is only available for Android-based systems. OTT Navigator sits between the two: more configurable than Smarters, with a paid tier for extras. Kodi, with its PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, suits people who already use Kodi for a media library. VLC plays an M3U link in a pinch but is not built for browsing thousands of channels.

Amazon Fire TV

Fire TV Sticks based on Amazon’s Android-derived Fire OS run most of the same players as Google TV. Some are in the Amazon Appstore. Others are installed from outside the store after allowing apps from unknown sources in the developer options, a step our Fire TV Stick guide takes you through. Amazon has begun releasing some newer Fire TV devices on a different system of its own, Vega OS, which does not run Android apps from outside its store. If you are buying a Fire TV device specifically for IPTV, check which system the model uses.

Samsung Tizen and LG webOS

Samsung and LG sell a large share of the televisions in European homes. Their stores offer a narrower range of IPTV players, and availability varies between countries and changes over time. Players commonly used on these sets include IPTV Smarters Pro where it is listed, IBO Player and Smart IPTV.

Several of these use a model worth understanding before you install: the app is free to try, then asks for a one-off activation fee to the developer, and you load your playlist through the developer’s website using the TV’s MAC address shown on screen. VIDAA and Titan OS

These systems, found on Hisense sets and on some recent Philips and other models, have smaller app stores. An IPTV player may or may not be listed in your country. If you find one, it will usually be of the activation-fee type. If you do not, a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device in the HDMI port is the practical answer, and it will give you access to the players above.

Apple TV, iPhone and iPad

Apple’s App Store has a different set of IPTV players from Android, and TiViMate is not among them. Players available on the App Store change and differ by country, and many are paid or have in-app purchases. What Apple TV does well is image handling: with “Match Frame Rate” and “Match Dynamic Range” switched on under Video and Audio settings, European channels display smoothly. MAG and Formuler boxes

These boxes, long common in European homes, come with their own software designed around live television. MAG boxes load a portal linked to the box’s MAC address. Formuler boxes run Android with the MyTVOnline app preinstalled, which accepts portal or Xtream Codes logins and offers a remote with number keys and dedicated guide buttons. Android phones and tablets

Phones and tablets are the easiest devices of all: Google Play in every European country lists several IPTV players, IPTV Smarters Pro among them, and they install like any other app. TiViMate is designed for television screens rather than touch, so on a phone a player built for touch is more comfortable. Two things to watch. First, mobile data: an HD stream uses a few gigabytes an hour, which matters when roaming or on a capped plan, so most players let you pick a lower-quality version of a channel. Second, each phone playing counts as one of your plan’s screens while it plays, exactly like a television.

Windows, Mac and web browsers

On a computer, VLC and a number of dedicated players work with M3U links, and some providers offer a browser player. The computer guide covers the options.

Settings worth changing on any player in Europe

Match the frame rate to 50 Hz

European television is broadcast at 25 or 50 frames per second, while many streaming devices default to a 60 Hz output. The mismatch makes camera pans and sport look slightly jerky. Turning on automatic frame-rate matching, in the player (TiViMate calls it AFR), in the device (Match Content on Google TV and Apple TV, Match Original Frame Rate on Fire TV) or in both, is one of the most noticeable improvements a European viewer can make. It is especially visible during football.

Set the guide to your time zone

If programmes appear an hour off, look for the EPG time shift setting in the player. The UK, Ireland and Portugal are one hour behind most of the continent; Greece, Finland and the eastern EU are one hour ahead of it.

Choose audio and subtitle languages

Some channels carry more than one audio track or subtitles. Most players let you choose the preferred language once rather than switching it on every channel.

Hide the countries you never watch

A list of 25,000+ channels is quick to use only after you hide the categories you do not need. Ten minutes spent hiding or reordering groups by country is repaid every day.

Fees, and who receives them

Your IPTV subscription and your player are two separate purchases from two separate companies. Euroskara does not sell players or receive any part of their fees. Depending on the app, you may encounter an optional subscription for extra features, a one-off activation per television, or in-app purchases. Players that are free to use exist on every major platform, so paying for a player is a choice, not a requirement.
