TiViMate on Android TV and Fire TV, Tuned for European Channels

The walkthrough

1. Decide about Premium before you start

   The free version plays channels with the guide. Premium, bought through the TiViMate Companion app on an Android phone, adds features such as recording, catch-up, multiple playlists and multi-view, and there is a free trial. Setting up without Premium first is perfectly fine: nothing needs redoing if you upgrade later, because Premium is unlocked on the existing installation.

2. Install TiViMate

   On Android TV and Google TV, search Google Play for TiViMate IPTV Player. On a Fire TV Stick it is usually installed with Downloader, following the sideloading steps in the Firestick guide. Formuler and other Android boxes take it from whichever store or installer they support.

3. Add the Xtream login

   Open TiViMate, choose Add playlist, then Xtream Codes login. Enter the server address with http:// and its port, then the username and password, and press Next. TiViMate reports how many channels and titles it found, which is a quick sign that the details were accepted. Give the playlist a name you will recognise, such as Euroskara, and press Done. The first guide download follows automatically; leave the app on the guide screen for a few minutes while it fills, rather than judging the listings straight away.

4. Keep only the country groups you watch

   Open Settings, Playlists, select the playlist, then Manage groups, and untick the countries nobody at home watches. It is fully reversible, and a guide grid without dozens of unused markets scrolls far more quickly on modest hardware. In the same menu you can drag groups into a sensible order, so the countries you watch most sit at the top of the guide.

5. Set guide updates and time shift

   Under Settings, EPG, set updates to run every 12 or 24 hours. If listings from one source are consistently an hour early or late while the Android clock shows the right time, open that EPG source and adjust its time shift. Check the device time zone first, though, since a wrong zone is the more common cause.

6. Switch on auto frame rate

   In TiViMate’s playback settings, turn on auto frame rate (AFR). TiViMate then asks the television to change to 50 Hz for channels broadcast at 25 or 50 frames per second, and back again for others, which removes the regular stutter on panning sport. On a Fire TV, also switch on Match Original Frame Rate in the display settings so the request is honoured.

7. Pick audio and subtitle languages

   During playback, press select to open the overlay and use the audio and subtitle options to change track for the current channel. Where TiViMate’s playback settings offer preferred audio or subtitle languages on your version, set them so your usual language is chosen first. Channels only carry the tracks their broadcasters include.

8. Build favourites for the household

   Long-press select on a channel in the guide to add it to favourites, which then appear as their own group at the top of the list. That is where most families end up spending their evenings: local news, the national broadcaster from the country they grew up in, and the leagues they follow, pulled out of all 25,000+ channels into one short row.

When it does not go to plan

The playlist cannot be loaded

Check the server address has its port, the password has no trailing space and the plan’s end date has not passed. If the same login works in Smarters, delete the playlist in TiViMate and add it again from scratch.

Some countries have no guide data

A few smaller channels carry no listings. If a whole country group is empty, force an update from the EPG settings and wait several minutes. If it stays empty, send support the group name so the guide mapping can be checked.

The screen goes dark briefly on every channel change

That is auto frame rate switching the television between refresh rates, and some sets take a second or two to do it. If it bothers you on news channels, switching AFR off removes the pause at the cost of slight judder on sport.

Premium will not unlock on the television

Premium is bought in TiViMate Companion on an Android phone and then activated in TiViMate by signing in to the same TiViMate account. A purchase made through a different account, or an app from another developer with a similar name, will not unlock it.

Recordings fail on a Fire TV Stick

Recording needs Premium and space to store files, and sticks have little of the latter. In TiViMate’s recording settings, choose a larger storage location, such as a USB drive on boxes that have a port, or keep recordings short.

Channels play but the logos never appear

Logos are listed in the playlist and loaded after the channels themselves. Give them time, then update the playlist from Settings, Playlists. A few smaller regional channels simply have no logo to show.

Sound drifts out of step through a soundbar

Turn off audio passthrough in TiViMate’s playback settings so the Android device decodes the sound itself, which older soundbars and receivers handle more quickly. If the drift stays, check the delay setting on the soundbar or the television.
