LG webOS Televisions: Country Setting First, Channels Second

The walkthrough

1. Check the LG Services Country

   Open Settings, All Settings, General, System, Location and look at LG Services Country; on older webOS versions Location sits directly under General. It should match the country where the television is used. LG provides this setting for people who move, and changing it refreshes the store, which may ask you to accept terms again. Set it to where you actually live rather than to reach another market’s apps, since some built-in services depend on it.

2. Set the time and date

   Still under General, System, open Time and Date. Keep Set Automatically on and confirm the time zone. Every player takes its guide hours from this clock, so a set left on Central European Time in Lisbon, or on UK time in Brussels, places every listing an hour away from the wall clock.

3. Search LG’s app store

   Press Home and open Apps, which older models label LG Content Store. Search for IPTV Smarters Player, Smart IPTV or another player that accepts an Xtream login. Listings are set per country and change over time, so what you find may differ from a friend’s set elsewhere in Europe. Be wary of copies with names close to TiViMate: no genuine TiViMate exists for webOS.

4. Sign in on the television

   In a player with an Xtream option, choose it and enter the username, the password and the server URL including http:// and the port. The Magic Remote’s pointer makes the on-screen keyboard bearable, and a USB keyboard in the side of the set is faster still. Save the profile and wait while the channel list and guide download.

5. Or send an M3U link to Smart IPTV

   Smart IPTV shows a MAC address when it opens. From a phone or computer, enter that MAC and your M3U link at siptv.app/mylist and send it, then close and reopen the app on the television. There is no password box on the TV with this player, which puzzles many people the first time.

6. Adjust TruMotion for 50 Hz sport

   LG’s motion processing, TruMotion, inserts extra frames between the real ones. You will find it in the picture settings, under Picture Options or Clarity depending on the model year. Set it to Off, or to User with low de-judder and de-blur values, for the picture mode you watch most. Channels broadcast at 50 frames per second then look as they were produced, without the smeared edges around a moving ball.

7. Pick audio tracks and captions in the player

   When a channel offers more than one soundtrack or subtitles, change them from the player’s own controls during playback rather than from the television menu, because the TV’s audio language setting governs its built-in tuner, not apps. If no second track is offered, the broadcaster did not send one with that feed.

8. Move the player to the front of the launcher

   On the home launcher, press and hold OK on the player’s tile to edit the row and slide it near the front. Combined with a favourites list inside the player, built around the few countries your household actually watches, it turns the full 25,000+ line-up into something you can reach in a couple of clicks.

When it does not go to plan

The player vanished from the store after an update

webOS updates occasionally refresh the store based on the LG Services Country. Re-check that setting first. If the listing has gone for your country, install another player that takes the same Xtream login or M3U link; the account is unaffected.

Sound but a black picture on certain channels

The channel’s video format is the likely cause, and older webOS versions decode some 4K HEVC feeds poorly. Pick the FHD or HD copy of the channel and, where the player lets you choose a playback engine, try the other one.

One country’s channels have no programme guide

Guide data is matched channel by channel, and a few smaller regional channels carry no listings at all. If a whole group is blank while others fill, refresh the guide from the player’s settings and give it a few minutes. If it stays empty, send support the group name so the mapping can be checked.

Wi-Fi is slow for the first minutes after switching on

If the router broadcasts one combined name for both bands, the set can settle on the slower 2.4 GHz band. Separate names for 2.4 and 5 GHz, set in the router’s admin page, let you pin the TV to 5 GHz. On a panel mounted flat against brick, a short Ethernet run or a powerline adapter is often the only lasting fix.

Smart IPTV reports that no playlist is loaded

The link went to a different MAC. Compare the MAC on the app screen with what you typed at siptv.app/mylist, character by character, then resend. Restart the app afterwards, because it does not check for a new list while open.
