The walkthrough
Decide what this computer is for
For a quick check that the account works, VLC or the browser is plenty. For a regular screen, in a student flat or a home office, a desktop player with a guide is more comfortable. If the laptop will feed a television over HDMI, the desktop app gives the cleanest full-screen picture. Choose one route below; the others can be added later with the same details.
Route one: open the M3U link in VLC
Install VLC from videolan.org. On Windows choose Media, Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N); on a Mac choose File, Open Network (Cmd+N). Paste the M3U link and press Play. A large playlist takes a little while to read before the first channel starts. Press Ctrl+L on Windows, or open Window, Playlist on a Mac, to browse the channels by name and group.
Switch soundtrack and subtitles in VLC
While a channel plays, open Audio, Audio Track to choose between the tracks a broadcaster sends, such as the original language and a dub. Subtitle, Sub Track does the same for subtitles when the feed carries them. In VLC’s preferences, the Audio and Subtitles sections have preferred language fields, so VLC can pick your language automatically each time.
Route two: IPTV Smarters for desktop
Download the Windows or macOS installer from the IPTV Smarters developer’s own site rather than a download portal, where repackaged installers sometimes bundle unwanted software. Install and open it, choose Login with Xtream Codes API, and enter a profile name, the username, the password and the server address. Live TV, the guide and on-demand sections appear in the same layout as on television versions.
Route three: the browser
If your activation message includes a web player address, open it in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and sign in. Nothing is installed and nothing is left behind, which suits a shared or borrowed computer. Browser playback depends on the formats each browser supports, so a channel that refuses to play there may still work in VLC.
Check the computer’s time zone
Guide times in a desktop player follow the system clock. On Windows open Settings, Time and language, Date and time; on a Mac open System Settings, General, Date and Time. A laptop back from a trip to Helsinki may still think it is two hours ahead of London, and every listing will be off by the same amount.
Keep playback smooth on a laptop
On battery, Windows and macOS reduce performance to save power, which can show up as dropped frames on high-bitrate channels. Plug in for a long match, or choose Best performance under the Windows power mode settings. Close browser tabs that are playing video, and on a laptop without an Ethernet port a USB network adapter gives a steadier feed than Wi-Fi.
Put the picture on a television
An HDMI cable from laptop to TV is the most reliable option. Windows can also cast to Miracast-capable televisions with the Windows key and K, and a Mac can use AirPlay to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible set. Wireless casting adds a delay and depends on the Wi-Fi, so for football the cable wins. When the laptop is connected, set the display to duplicate or second screen only, and pick the television as the sound output so the commentary does not come from the laptop speakers.
When it does not go to plan
VLC fills the playlist but nothing starts
Give VLC time to finish reading the list; with 25,000+ channels that can take a minute. If one channel still refuses, try its copy in another quality. Updating VLC to the current release clears most codec complaints.
Picture but no sound
VLC may have picked an empty or description track. Open Audio, Audio Track and choose another. On Windows also check Audio, Audio Device, especially when a monitor with speakers or a Bluetooth headset is connected.
Windows SmartScreen warns about the installer
Stop and check where the file came from. The genuine IPTV Smarters installer comes from the developer’s own site. If yours came from anywhere else, delete it and fetch it again from the source, rather than switching off SmartScreen to get past the warning.
macOS says the app cannot be opened
Gatekeeper blocks apps from developers it cannot identify. If you are certain the installer came from the developer, macOS shows an Open Anyway button under System Settings, Privacy and Security after the first attempt. If you are not sure of the source, do not override it.
Guide times differ from the television next door
One of the two devices has the wrong time zone. Correct the computer as in step six and the television as described in its own guide, and both will match the wall clock.
Choppy in the browser but smooth in VLC
The browser is decoding without hardware help, or another tab is competing for it. Close other tabs, check that graphics or hardware acceleration is enabled in the browser’s system settings, and if the stutter remains, watch that channel in VLC or the desktop app instead.

Questions about Windows PC and Mac
Is VLC enough, or do I need an IPTV app?
VLC plays the channels but has no guide grid or catch-up. For occasional viewing it is fine; for everyday use, a desktop player with a guide is more pleasant.
Does it work on Linux?
VLC runs on most Linux distributions and opens the M3U link in exactly the same way. For desktop IPTV players, check each developer’s site for Linux builds before assuming one exists.
Can I use it on a work laptop?
The browser route needs no installation, but your employer’s rules still apply. Many company networks block streaming, and IT policies often forbid installing software.
Why does my laptop run hot on 4K channels?
Decoding 4K HEVC without hardware support is hard work. Recent laptops decode it in dedicated hardware, while older ones fall back to the main processor. On an older machine, choose the FHD copy of the channel.
Can a PC and a television play at the same time?
Yes, if your plan includes enough connections. Each stream playing at once uses one connection, whichever device it plays on.
Which VLC shortcuts are worth knowing?
On Windows and Linux, F toggles full screen, the space bar pauses, B cycles through audio tracks and V cycles through subtitle tracks, which is the quickest way to find the right language on a multilingual channel. On a Mac, Cmd+F handles full screen.
Can I watch on a Chromebook?
Chromebooks that run Android apps can install a player from Google Play, and VLC is available there too. On models without Android app support, the browser route is the simplest option.
Will the desktop player follow me between countries?
The login works on any connection, so a laptop taken from Dublin to a conference in Vienna plays exactly as it does at home. Guide times follow the system clock, which Windows and macOS usually update automatically when you arrive.
