Across Europe, home broadband now ranges from full fibre running straight into the house to copper lines that have been in the ground for decades. Ultra HD television is the task that exposes the difference. A 4K stream needs a steady flow of data for the whole length of a match or a film, and the question is less whether your package advertises a big number than whether that number actually reaches the television at eight in the evening.
The other half of the question is the source. Plenty of channels carry a 4K badge while showing an upscaled HD picture, which adds pixels but no detail. The feeds listed below are produced in Ultra HD by the broadcaster and carried at a high bitrate, and each one has an ordinary HD version beside it in the channel list.

How your type of line copes
Full fibre to the home
A fibre line running all the way into the property delivers much the same speed whether you live next to the exchange or at the end of the road. For 4K it is the easiest case: the bottleneck is almost never the line itself, and any buffering usually traces back to Wi-Fi inside the house.
Cable broadband
Cable networks offer high headline speeds, but capacity is shared with neighbours on the same local segment. A connection that tests well at lunchtime can be noticeably slower in the evening peak, which happens to be when the football is on. Run a speed test on the television itself at the time you normally watch, not in the morning.
Copper to the street cabinet
Where fibre stops at a street cabinet and copper covers the last stretch, speed falls with the distance between cabinet and home. Some of these lines hold 50 Mbps easily and some struggle to keep 25 Mbps steady. If yours is near the lower end, keep 4K for one screen at a time and let other devices use HD.

Inside the house: where 4K is usually lost
The router supplied by a broadband provider is often tucked beside the front door or in a hallway cupboard, a long way from the living room. A 4K picture that breaks up on Wi-Fi and plays cleanly over a cable is a problem with the home network, not the service. A network cable from router to television is the most reliable fix; powerline adapters or a mesh system are the next best options when a cable run is impractical. On the device, make sure hardware decoding is switched on in the player, as software decoding can struggle to keep up with Ultra HD.
When 4K is worth the bandwidth, and when HD is enough
Ultra HD earns its place on a television of around 55 inches or more, for sport and for films. On a phone, a tablet or a small kitchen TV, HD looks the same to the eye and uses roughly a quarter of the data, which leaves more of your line for everyone else. Is my European broadband fast enough for 4K?
If it holds a steady 25 Mbps at the television, one 4K stream will play. Around 50 Mbps gives the rest of the household room to browse and stream at the same time. Full-fibre and cable packages generally clear that; the lines worth testing first are long copper runs and anything relying on Wi-Fi through several walls.
What exactly makes a stream 4K?
A picture of 3840 by 2160 pixels, four times the detail of 1080p. The resolution is only half of the story, though. Bitrate, the amount of data spent on each second of video, decides whether that detail survives, which is why a well-encoded 4K feed looks sharper than a starved one at the same nominal resolution.
Which hardware will actually show it?
Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Nvidia Shield, Formuler Z11 Pro Max and Apple TV 4K all will, as will Samsung, LG and Sony 4K televisions from 2019 onwards. Older Fire TV Sticks and entry-level Android boxes stop at 1080p whatever the stream contains, so check the model before blaming the connection.
Is Ultra HD a more expensive plan?
No. The 4K feeds are on every plan from one month to twelve. The plan length and the number of screens you choose set the price; neither one changes the picture quality.
Do you have 8K channels?
No, and a service that advertises them in quantity is relabelling something else. Very little live television is produced in 8K. A 4K feed at a high bitrate is the realistic best picture today, and that is what is on offer here.
HD plays perfectly but 4K keeps buffering. Why?
Ultra HD uses three to four times as much data as HD, which makes it the first stream to struggle on a borderline connection. Turn on hardware decoding in the player, run a network cable to the device if it is on Wi-Fi, and switch to the HD copy during the busiest part of the evening.
