The procedure behind all of them is short. A player app goes onto the device, you give it your three login details, and the channels arrive. Three checks that save time in a European home

Set the device to your real time zone. UK time for Britain, Ireland and Portugal; Central European Time for most of the continent. A wrong setting shifts the whole programme guide and makes it look as if listings are broken.
Look at where your broadband router sits. Many are fitted by the front door, far from the television. If the TV is on weak Wi-Fi, a network cable or a powerline adapter will do more for the picture than any setting in the app.
Check your TV’s app store first. Samsung and LG stores do not carry the same apps in every country. If the player you want is not there, pick the alternative in the same guide before buying extra hardware.

What does setting up actually involve?

Three things, on any device. Install a player app, open its Xtream Codes login option, and type in the server address, username and password from your activation message. The channel list and programme guide then download by themselves. The individual guides exist because each platform hides those options in a different menu.

My television was bought in Europe. Does that change anything?

Only in small ways. The apps available in the Samsung and LG stores can differ between countries, so if a player named in a guide is missing from your store, try the alternative listed in the same guide, or plug in a Fire TV Stick or an Android TV box and follow that guide instead. Also check the TV is set to your real time zone, or the programme guide will be shifted.

What equipment do I need?

A device that runs apps, such as a smart TV, streaming stick, set-top box, phone or computer; a broadband connection of about 25 Mbps if you want 4K; and a subscription. There is no satellite dish, no decoder card and no engineer visit. Most European homes already have everything except the login.

Which player is easiest for a first attempt?

What if I get stuck?

A typical setup takes about ten minutes, but if you stall, take a photo of the screen and send it to support on WhatsApp. Someone will tell you which button to press next while you are still sitting in front of the television.

Can I set up a second home, say a flat in Spain, on the same account?

You can install the player on devices in both places with the same login. How many of them can watch at the same moment depends on the number of screens on your plan, so choose a tier that covers everyone who might be watching at once.
